So after a 16 year Hiatus, I find myself back in Education...
For me, Tuesday September 27th began with 'Marimba' at 06:55. Its the annoying ringtone from the alarm on my iPhone which I really should change to something more tolerable. After contemplating leaving the comfort and warmth of my bed for a good ten minutes, it was time for a shower, some 'breakfast'- (and I use the term very loosely (Rice Krispies Multi-Grain Shapes) - and then it was time for the now extended school run.
After dropping my daughter off at quarter-to nine, I embarked upon what would be today's second journey of many and then began the westbound commute along the M62 to the Screen School.
Did I mention a 16 year hiatus? At 34, It seems I'm possibly the elder of the group, that's with the exception of a few tutors (no offence intended) but so far I feel like I'm fitting in quite nicely thanks :)
Why Media? Why Now?
Many Moons ago, I did my A-Levels, which was back in the day of VHS dubbing from tape-to tape and an editing suite took up a whole classroom almost. Quite honestly, I've always had a massive interest in all things media, multi-media and all things digital and entertaining, so I passed my A-levels and took a year out and started work, which then became another year out and now I find myself picking up from where I left off all that time ago.
So, Uni then?
I intend to grab as much from this course as is humanly possible and ultimately I would love to work freelance as a new media artist, maker of music video promos, or something similar which ticks the above boxes. I am hugely interested in the likes of director Jonas Akerlund and Shynola productions and I am currently building a portfolio of photos and images which inspire me to design stuff. Click some of the links below and enjoy.
I have just spent the summer working at 5 music festivals, which racks the total up to 10 major UK music events in the last 2 years. And when I'm not at college or being a dad, I also work. By the way, did I mention I liked music? Ideally, I'd like to explore this genre in greater depth and further develop my obsession with music promos, moving digital visual art and interactive technology.
I hope to use this course to broaden my understanding of interactivity based around convergence and multi-platform presentation. I am keen to adopt a hands on approach to the concept of augmented reality and how mobile technology adapts across visual genres. I intend to use my degree to familiarise myself with what I predict to be a hugely expanding area for use in freelance marketing, web publishing and advertising.
Over the last two days at university I have been introduced to many new and genuinely exciting areas of digital media, some of which I am already familiar with and others which I am only just discovering. I intend to use this blog, along with my written journal as a way of documenting and expressing myself personally, professionally and academically throughout the course of the next three years, which I am told will fly by...
